Youngkin signed two suicide prevention bills introduced by Del. Atoosa R. Reaser, D-Loudoun. One requires schools to provide parents with suicide prevention materials if the student is in “imminent risk of suicide.” The other requires schools to provide materials on safe gun storage to parents of students deemed by school personnel to be in danger of hurting themselves or others. Reaser said in an email that passage of the bills was a “major step in the right direction in our efforts to combat gun violence with simple, reasonable measures.”

But Reaser was disappointed that Youngkin vetoed her bill designed to increase affordable, assisted-living housing for the elderly. Youngkin said in his veto message the measure could allow communities to enact “overly burdensome regulations that lack any meaningful concessions or incentives” for builders.

Youngkin also vetoed a Reaser-sponsored bill that would’ve allowed communities to set early voting dates and hours. The bill was a response to the Republican-led Loudoun Electoral Board ending Sunday voting, angering the Democratic-led Board of Supervisors and some voters.
