FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Feb. 26, 2025 Contact: Amber Gantt Email: amber@vahousedems.org Phone: (321) 914-7350 Virginia House Democrats Condemn Republican Efforts to Slash Medicaid and SNAP Benefits to Pay for Trump's Tax Cuts for the Wealthy RICHMOND, VA - Today, the Virginia House Democratic Caucus released the following statement condemning congressional Republicans for pushing devastating cuts to Medicaid and SNAP benefits, threatening the health and well-being of nearly 2 million Virginians. These cuts, designed to offset Donald Trump's massive tax breaks for the wealthy, would automatically strip 630,000 Virginians of their healthcare coverage, particularly in rural communities, and further exasperate food insecurity for thousands of low-income families, seniors, and children. "Republicans in Washington are once again making their priorities clear: big tax giveaways for billionaires and corporations while ripping healthcare and food assistance away from working families, leaving working Virginians to foot the bill. This isn't fiscal responsibility-it's cruel and a direct attack on Virginians, especially those in our rural communities who rely on Medicaid for life-saving care and SNAP benefits to put food on the table. These proposed cuts aren't just numbers on a budget spreadsheet—they represent real people, real families, and real lives on the line. Our healthcare system cannot afford to be held hostage by Republican tax schemes. We must protect Virginians from losing their coverage and ensure Virginians have access to the care and support they need."
