Virginia House Democratic Caucus Statement on
Governor Glenn Youngkin's Commutation of Convicted
Ex-Police Officer's Sentence
RICHMOND, VA-- Today, the Virginia House Democratic Caucus released the following statement on Governor Glenn Youngkin's decision to commute the sentence of former Fairfax County Sergeant Wesley Shifflett:
"Youngkin's commutation sends a message to other families seeking justice-that their pain is secondary to political points," said Delegate Holly Seibold (HD-12), whose district encompasses Tysons.
"These cases are difficult. However, a jury reviewed the evidence and reached a conviction, a judge issued the sentence, and the justice system functioned as it should," said Leader Charniele Herring. "This action erodes trust in our legal system and our communities."
