A weekend voting event that blends civic duty with community could be returning to Loudoun as early as April as both the General Assembly and county Electoral Board eye reopening voting locations on Sundays.

Souls to the Polls is a faith-based movement to engage residents and has been led in Loudoun by the NAACP and Chapter President Bishop Michelle Thomas. Typically, community members meet at a designated location to march to the polls with signs. Voting was followed by a party that included music, vendors and food trucks.

Loudoun Del. Atoosa Reaser (D-27) also led an effort this year to give the Board of Supervisors, rather than the Electoral Board, authority to set hours of operation for satellite voting operations.

Supervisors already choose the locations, and are best positioned to make those decisions, she told Loudoun Now.

Reaser’s bill, HB 71, was reworked in House committees before ultimately being continued to next year.
