Bills focused on suicide prevention and recognizing warning signs in students who could pose a threat to others await Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s signature after they passed the General Assembly in the recent legislative session.

Introduced by Del. Atoosa Reaser, D-Loudoun, the bills represent a commitment to community safety and mental health support, according to a release from Reaser’s office.

HB 2055 mandates that parents or guardians receive suicide prevention materials, including information on safe firearm storage and limiting access to lethal means, when a student is at imminent risk of suicide.

HB 2679 ensures that parents or guardians of students deemed to pose a threat to others receive educational materials on recognizing and responding to warning signs, including information on safe firearm storage, to help mitigate potential risks.

In a statement, Reaser said the bills are designed to ensure that parents have access to information and resources to keep their children safe.
