A bill by Del. Atoosa Reaser (D-27) that would create a new classification for personal property taxes on electric landscaping equipment is advancing in the General Assembly after the House Finance Committee approved the bill on Wednesday.
HB 557 is limited to equipment used by a business to maintain public, or private gardens, lawns, trees, shrubs, or other plants, such as lawn mowers, edgers, trimmers, leaf blowers, and chainsaws. The legislation prohibits localities from setting the new tax class higher than the general personal property taxes but allows them to lower it.
