I commend Speaker Scott for immediately mobilizing to defend the 144,483 hardworking federal employees who call Virginia home by declaring the formation of an Emergency Committee on the Impacts of Federal Workers and Funding Reductions. This Emergency Committee will ensure that the General Assembly can adopt measures to protect Virginia families and mitigate impact on the state budget. I look forward to working with this committee and finding protections we will implement.
Loudoun County and all of Virginia face economic hardship in light of the Trump administration's stated intent to drastically reduce the federal workforce and shift remaining workers from the Metro D.C. region to other areas of the country, with a 10% goal for reduction in force. Alongside a general reduction of the federal workforce, the administration aims to move some of the federal workers who remain outside of the D.C. metro area. This includes vital employees in the realm of national defense.
Protecting our country's national security is not, and should not become, a partisan issue. These Virginians - Republicans and Democrats alike - are professionals in their fields, working diligently to keep the United States safe, often at a great personal cost to their families.
Our federal workers provide critical services that support 8.7 million Virginians and 335 million Americans. Alongside our federal workers, Virginia has received $106 billion in awarded federal contracts. Proposed reductions in either the federal workforce or federal contracts will have severe economic consequences for the entire Commonwealth. We are prepared to stand strong in our service to them, their communities, and all of Virginia.
