Have you ever signed up for a free trial or monthly subscription in just a few seconds – only to spend 20 minutes clicking through menus, waiting on hold, or talking to a customer service representative to cancel it?

Beginning July 1, Virginia hopes to put an end to that frustration. 

Under the “Click to cancel” law HB 1022, companies that allow consumers to sign up for certain subscriptions online must make canceling them just as easy.

The law strengthens Virginia’s consumer protection laws governing automatic renewals and recurring subscriptions.

The legislation was introduced by state Delegate Atoosa Reaser. She said a constituent asked her to file it.

Reaser said the idea came from a simple question of fairness. “We have subscriptions that you can get with just a click, and you should be able to end them with just a click,” said Reaser.
